FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS HOLD ON FOR 2-1 WIN OVER CASCADES

CHILLIWACK, British Columbia – Led by first half goals from fourth-year forward Dominic Reinold (Wesseling, Germany) and fourth-year midfielder Carlos Del Aguila (Langley, B.C.) the Trinity Western University men’s soccer team opened the Canada West season with a 2-1 victory over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades Friday night at Townsend Park in Chilliwack, B.C.

Third year keeper Evan Lowther (Surrey, B.C.) made three saves to earn the victory for TWU, while UFV’s Mark Village made one save in the loss.

“We gave them hope in the second half, by not winning second balls,” said Spartans coach Pat Rohla. “We know UFV will work hard, and they did, and they put us under in the second half. We have to have the resolve to finish our chances when we get them. Overall we are pleased with the result and some of our players had solid performances. We still have to work on things but it is a good start against a very feisty Fraser Valley team.”

The Spartans had the better of the play in the opening 45 minutes as they outshot the Cascades six to four, while the reverse was true in the second half, as both teams ended the match with 10 total shots.

On a rain-soaked evening, Reinold, a Human Kinetics major, opened the scoring in the 18th minute. He slotted the ball past Village and into the bottom left corner of the Cascades net to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.

Del Aguila got the eventual game winner in the 33rd minute of the opening frame. He took a feed from TWU third year forward Jarvis Ambaka (Maragoli, Kenya) and hit a laser from outside the top of the penalty area that Village was unable to contain to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead with less than 12 minutes remaining in the opening frame.

The Cascades Ethan Claibourne-Collinsmade the second half interesting when he scored in the 65th minute on a penalty kick. The penalty kick was awarded after TWU first-year defender Jonah Reinhart (Langley, B.C./Bradenton, FL) was called for a hand ball in the penalty area.

“It was no big deal and we are happy with the way Jonah played,” commented Rohla. “It’s part of soccer. He didn’t make a deliberate play on the ball. It just happened.”

The Spartans will now have a day off before heading to the island to take on the University of Victoria Vikes Sunday afternoon at Centennial Stadium on the UVIC campus in Victoria. The Cascades will also have a day off before hosting the University of British Columbia Sunday afternoon in Chilliwack. The Vikes and the Thunderbirds played tonight in Victoria, with the visiting No. 1 T-Birds emerging with a dominating 4-1 victory.

Match Notes: TWU was charged with one offside, while UFV recorded seven…the Spartans are now 3-0-2 overall this season and 1-0 in Canada West… the win gives the Spartans four straight wins in Canada West matches over the Cascades, dating back to last season… TWU’s last loss was 1-0 on Sept. 9, 2011.
