SPARTANS ROLL TO STRAIGHT SETS WIN OVER WOLFPACK

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 1 Trinity Western women’s volleyball team improved to 5-1 on the season and completed a weekend sweep of Thompson Rivers (0-6) with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-7, 25-11) win Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

With a dominant serving effort that saw the Spartans set a team record for most aces in a three-set match with 18, bettering the previous mark of 16, which was set Sept. 13, 2002 against Pacific, TWU rolled to a second straight convincing win over the WolfPack.

Leading the Spartans serving brigade was setter Kelci French (Okotoks, Alta.) who had eight aces to break her personal record of seven, which she set Jan. 13, 2012 against Alberta, and fell just two shy of the TWU record of 10, held by current assistant coach Lies Reimer.

The Spartans were the better side in every statistical category as they hit .406 as a team compared to TRU’s .000, had five blocks to TRU’s three, had a 34-15 advantage in digs and a 34-13 edge in assists. Trinity Western also had 38 kills to TRU’s 13.

For the second straight night, Carly Hamilton (Calgary) led the Spartans in kills as she had a match-high 12 to go along with seven digs and a block. Royal Richardson (Rocky Mountain House, Alta.) added seven kills for the Spartans while also contributing three aces, six digs and a block. Alicia Perrin (Creston, B.C.), who sat out Friday’s game, was back Saturday and had seven kills on seven attempts. Along with her impressive serving night, French also had 17 assists and three digs.

Thompson Rivers was led by Carly Nelson, who had a team-high four kills as well as two digs. Kristen Giesbrecht had a match-high 13 digs to go along with three kills and four digs. Setter Katie Woo had 13 assists.

“I think this game was good for developing as a team and giving everybody an opportunity to contribute,” said Spartans coach Ryan Hofer. “It’s not just going to be seven athletes who help us be successful this year. Tonight we had a chance to get a lot of players on the court, which will certainly help us in the future.

“I thought everybody played really well today. I was really impressed with our intensity throughout the entire match. The girls went out there and got the job done.”

In the first set, the Spartans put together arguably their most dominant effort as they had 15 kills and a .426 hitting percentage while keeping TRU to a .050 attack percentage and just five kills en route to a 16-point win.

In the second, TWU continued to press as they had a .435 hitting percentage and made just two attack errors. The Spartans maintained a high intensity and TRU, despite only two attack errors, was simply no match for the Spartans as TWU took the set by 18 points.

In the third set, the Spartans played their entire bench and, although TRU kept it close early, TWU was again the dominant side down the stretch, cruising to a 14-point win.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend, Nov. 16-17, with the Spartans hosting Saskatchewan and TRU hosting Alberta.
