SPARTANS BATTLE PAST COUGARS

CALGARY  – The No. 2 ranked Trinity Western University women’s soccer team scored three second-half goals to get past the Mount Royal University Cougars 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Mount Royal Stadium Field in Calgary.

The TWU extends their record to a perfect 8-0, outscoring their opponents 19-0 in their previous five matches - while the loss drops the Cougars to 0-5-2 so far this season.

“With the wind conditions it was a tricky game and we had a tough start - Mount Royal was very organized defensively and battled well,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “We showed more life in the second half and were able to possess the ball better and as usual our back four, were once again solid. But we need to get a lot better than where we are at right now.”

Third-year Surrey, B.C. native Jennifer Castillo started the scoring in the 46th minute, while teammates Krista Gommeringer and Kristen Santema added markers in the 55th and 90th minutes respectively.

Goalkeeper Kristen Funk earned the win in net, recording four saves in victory, while MRU’s Kelsey Marklund took the loss in goal making six stops.

After an evenly played first-half, that saw field conditions dictate the play with winds of upwards of 45 kilometers per hour - the second-half was much more offensive as the Cougars couldn’t find an answer for the fast-paced Spartans offence.

Firing a quality ball across from the right-side, Jennifer Castillo was the first to find the score sheet, heading home a Colleen Webber cross to open the scoring 1-0 just a minute into the second-half.

The Spartans would continue to press, adding their second tally at the 55 minute mark as goalkeeper Kelsey Marklund charge out hard on a 50-50 ball in the crease, which ricocheted off her hands and onto the foot of Krista Gommeringer, who added her ninth goal of the season to make it 2-0.

With the clock winding down in the game’s final minutes, the opportunistic Spartans would capitalize yet again, as Kristen Santema converted on a through ball sent across the box past a helpless Marklund.

TWU continues their Alberta road swing, heading to the provincial capital to square-off with the University of Alberta Pandas, while Mount Royal prepares for the second game of their home stand playing against another B.C. rival, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

Match Notes: With the shutout the Funk extended her TWU record shutout streak to 565 minutes…TWU has now gone 21 (20-0-1) Canada West conference matches without a loss…Including Funk the Spartans have eight players who hail from Calgary …
