Back's Against the Wall

Langley, British Columbia - A strong second half surge was not enough for the Trinity Western University women's soccer team to overcome an early goal by the University of Lethbridge as the Spartans fell 1-0 to the visiting Pronghorns Saturday afternoon at TWU.

"We didn't play well and were not mentally strong enough to convert our chances and Lethbridge to their credit defended very well and played with heart," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "We know that we have the ability to play well and we are going to have to pick up the pieces because it is going to be a fight for the final playoff spot."

Lethbridge's Ashley Parker got the game winner in the 22nd minute of the match. Her goal came on a counter attack after the Spartans had put pressure on the Pronghorns. The 'Horns had a quick transition and Lethbridge's Kira Lawernce found Parker up front to go in alone on the Spartans net.

The Spartans (3-2-2) came on strong in the second half. TWU put constant pressure on the Lethbridge back's and keeper Megon Lumley (Lethbridge, AB). But the Pronghorns withstood the pressure to hold on for their fourth (4-3-0) win of the season.

Lumley stopped eight Spartan shots to earn the shutout, while TWU's Angela Garriott (Campbell River, BC) made two saves in the match and was not tested in the second half. On the match the Spartans outshot the 'Horns 12 to 3.

TWU now has a week off before heading to the University of Victoria for a match on Saturday, October 9. Match time is set for 12 noon. Lethbridge is now off to play the University of British Columbia tomorrow afternoon at Point Grey. Match time is set for 12 noon.
