MITSUBISHI TOP TEN TUESDAY (#19)
Spartans men’s volleyball back in CIS Top 10

OTTAWA (CIS)
– The Trinity Western University Spartans men’s volleyball team is back in the CIS Top 10 after splitting last weekend’s matches with the fourth ranked UBC Thunderbirds, including a 3-2 comeback victory last Saturday night. The Spartans (8-8), ranked tenth this week, also pushed the T-Birds (13-5) to five sets in their meeting at TWU’s David E. Enarson gymnasium the night before, with UBC prevailing. This weekend the Spartans host the top ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears (14-2), who have held the top spot in the polls all season, in the final weekend of regular season matches for the Canada West Conference. The Winnipeg Wesmen (14-2), who remain in second spot in the poll, finish up the regular season with a home-and-home series this Wednesday and Friday with eighth ranked Brandon University Bobcats (8-8).

The Spartan women’s volleyball team (12-6), despite two convincing 3-0 victories last Thursday and Friday against SFU on Burnaby Mountain, remain tied with McGill University (15-6) for sixth in this week’s women’s poll. Friday and Saturday night the Spartans host the second ranked UBC Thunderbirds (17-1) in their final regular season matches. The Manitoba Bisons (17-1) who have held the top spot in the polls all season, host the defending national champs, the fourth ranked Alberta Pandas.

In women’s basketball, the reigning CIS champion Simon Fraser University Clan (21-1), who also lead their poll for the 11th time in as many weeks this season, clinched first place in the ultra-competitive Canada West Pacific Division with a weekend sweep of Trinity Western (8-14), 90-58 and 82-49. Simon Fraser ends conference play at home against the same Spartans on Friday.

In men’s hoops, the top ranked and defending champion Carleton Ravens improved to 19-0 in conference play, and are three wins away from running the table in the regular season for the third time in five years (2004-05, 2003-04). The Ravens close out the campaign with home dates with RMC and Queen’s (12-7) this weekend and against No. 6 Ottawa (15-4) on February 16. Three Canada West teams are ranked in the top seven this week, including No. 2 Brandon Bobcats (18-2), No. 3 Calgary Dinos (17-3), and No. 7 UBC Thunderbirds (16-5).
