Spartans Drop Weekend
Langley, British Columbia –Trinity Western University’s men’s volleyball team tried to rebound tonight after last night’s disappointing 3-1 loss to the University of Alberta Golden Bears, but weren’t able to do so, losing to the ’Bears, 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 25-11, 20-25, 15-11).
Trinity Western came out with intensity and quickly put Alberta on their heels. The Spartans’ gained an early lead that the Golden Bears couldn’t surmount, and won the first set 25-19.
The second and third sets belonged to Alberta. After losing a tight second set 25-22, Spartans folded under the Golden Bear pressure in the third, losing 25-11.
In the fourth set, Spartan spirit shined. TWU played tough and posted a 25-20 victory over the Golden Bears, sending it to a fifth and final set.
Both teams laid it on the line in the deciding set. At the first technical timeout, Trinity Western trailed 6-8. Soon after, Corry Baum (4th yr., outside hitter, Cochrane, AB) tied it at 8 with a powerful cross-court spike. Alberta’s Mike McPherson followed Baum’s kill with one of his own, which began a 3 point shift favoring the Golden Bears, 11-8. The Spartans didn’t give up and countered the Alberta run with a 2 point run of their own.
It just wasn’t enough. Alberta took advantage of Spartan miscues and outscored the Spartans 5-1 down the stretch to take the 5th and deciding set 15-11.
Luke Bainard (4th yr., outside hitter, Brooklin, ON) led the Spartans with 21 kills, 6 digs, and 1 ace. While the Golden Bears were led by Sandy Hederson with 16 kills and 3 aces.
The loss puts the Spartans’ at 4-2 in league play, and winning improves the Golden Bears’ record to 2-2.
The Spartans’ travel to Calgary next weekend to challenge the Dinos.
