Spartans atone for last years CCAA championship loss

Langley, British Columbia –
On Saturday December 18, 1999 the Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team hosted the Red Deer College Kings in an exhibition volleyball match. Tonight’s game would be a good measuring post to see how much the Spartans have improved by playing in the highly competitive Canada West division of the CIAU. This match is the first meeting between the two teams since the bronze medal game at last year’s CCAA national championships. The Kings won the bronze medal defeating the Spartans 3-2 (15-3, 12-15, 14-16, 15-8, 15-11).

If tonight’s score was any indication, the improvement by the Spartans has been substantial, as they never allowed the Kings to get rolling. The Spartans defeated the Red Deer 4-1 (25-14, 25-23, 25-17, 13-25, 25-21).

After the match Trinity Western University’s coach Ron Pike commented, “the score was indicative of how good our guys are playing right now. Red Deer is a very good team and well deserving of their number 2 ranking in the CCAA. The game just shows how our guys have improved over last year.”

The Spartans were led by Mark Huberts (10 kills, 3 blocks) and Luke Bainard (11 kills, 2 aces).

Red Deer College Kings boasts a strong winning tradition in men’s volleyball having won the Canadian Championships (CCAA) twice in the 1990’s (1994-95, 1995-96). They are currently ranked #2 in the Canadian College Athletic Association behind Grand Prairie.

Trinity Western University is currently in their first season in the Canada West division of the CIAU. The Spartans are currently1-10 and are 2 points behind the 4th place University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

Red Deer is in town to play a two game series with Trinity Western, with game two going Monday December 20 at 2:00 pm.
