Bears Sweep Spartans
TWU falls 3-0 to Alberta for second loss of season

EDMONTON - The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team dropped their second match of the weekend to the University of Alberta Saturday night in Edmonton. The number one ranked Spartans had a stronger match tonight, but they were still unable to solve the defending CIS champions as TWU fell 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-23). The two consecutive 3-0 losses to the number two ranked Golden Bears will most likely mean that the Spartans and the Golden Bears will switch spots atop the CIS top ten.

Alberta started the match off strong, taking the first set 25-19 and seemingly well on their way to another dominant showing.

They opened the second set with a 6-1 lead, prompting the Spartans to call a time-out and re-group.  Coming out of the break, the two teams traded points and TWU drew within a couple of points.  The Bears rolled up another lead, going up 21-18 but the Spartans clawed back, tied the set and forced extra points but it was the Bears who came out in the end, 27-25.

Trinity Western continued their improved play in the third set, The two teams were tied at 11-11 when Alberta took control of the set. The Golden Bears went on a 5-1 run to take a 16-12 lead at the second timeout. Alberta kept the pressure on after the timeout and extended their lead to 20-15. The Spartans did not stop as TWU clawed their way back into the set. TWU went on a 6-2 run to pull to within one point, 22-21.  The Golden Bears held and extended the lead to 24-21. The Spartans held off two match points and closed to 24-23, but were unable to tie the set as the Bears took the match 25-23.

Dallas Soonias led the home team with 21 kills, hitting at 51%, while Jeff Stel led the Spartans with 11 kills.
