SPARTANS STILL UNBEATEN IN 2012

SASKATOON, SASK  – Forward Jarvis Ambaka scored  with two minute remaining to lift the No.5 ranked Trinity Western University men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Saturday afternoon on Field 7 at Potash Corp Park in Saskatoon, Sask.

With the win, the Spartans remains undefeated with a 7-0-2 record, while the Huskies drop to 5-3-2.

“I am pleased for the guys and excited to get another win. It was a very competitive game with good soccer being played all around,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “Our whole back line played well and did a good job of going into shut-down mode after the goal. But we still need another level of box penetration and creativity up front.”

After back–and-forth quality chances by both teams, Trinity Western was awarded a free kick within 20 yards of the Huskie net. Defender Jordan Whitehead pinged it in from the flank to midfielder Brayden Gant who flicked it in to the box to a waiting Ambaka. Ambaka was able to send it into the top left corner past a leaping Huskie keeper Mark Diakiw to give the Spartans the late 1-0 lead.

“Jarvis stepped up and banged one home. He had a good performance where he created lots of opportunities for us,” said Rohla.

Less than five minutes prior to the Spartans goal TWU keeper Evan Lowther came up big to stop the Huskies Wilson Ntigne on a breakaway. The opportunity came off of an errant back pass, which ended up as a through ball for the Huskies.

“Evan was huge for us today,” said Rohla. “He made the big save at the right moment and it really lifted the team.”

Lowther had a solid match making eight saves for the shutout victory, while Diakiw was just as strong for the Huskies with five saves in the loss.

The Huskies remain at home to host the UBC Thunderbirds Sunday, while the Spartans travel to Edmonton to face the No. 4 University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Match Notes: Ambaka led the Spartans with five shots, while Brett Levis led the Huskies with four… Both teams with 11 shots each… TWU is 11-0-3 overall on the season…The Spartans have gone unbeaten in their last 11 CW conference dating back to Oct 29 of last season…
