SPARTANS EARN SPLIT IN DOUBLE HEADER

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team earned a split in their NCAA double header Sunday afternoon at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham, Wash. The Spartans fell 2-1 in the opener to the NCAA Div. II Western Washington University Vikings, but rebounded in the second match to defeat the NCAA Div. I Gonzaga University Bulldogs 1-0.

TWU forward Dan Lowen (Langley, B.C.) converted a Nathan Square-Briggs (Richmond, B.C.) corner to give the Spartans the early lead in the first game. Before giving up two straight to the Vikings as TWU fell 2-1 in the opening match.

"The first game wasn't really a good game for us, but even though we didn't play well we still had opportunities to win the game," commented TWU interim head coach Mike Shearon.

The Spartans gathered themselves for the second match against Gonzaga University and were able to eke out the 1-0 win on a goal by Square-Briggs. Square-Briggs scored the lone goal of the match when he converted a corner kick from defender Jason Wiens (Coldale, Alta.) with five minutes remaining in the match to give TWU the victory.

TWU keeper Andrew Kowan (Richmond, B.C.) made some timely saves to give the Spartans the 1-0 win over the Bulldogs.

"Our centre back's did a real good job of keeping us in the game," commented Shearon. "Overall it was a great team performance and a good job of fighting under adverse circumstances when we could have easily thrown in the towel."

Today's matches conclude the 2009 Spring Season for the Spartans. They will suit up again in August as they prepare to host the 2009 CIS men's soccer championships at TWU.
