OTTAWA (CIS) - The Trinity Western Spartans edged the Laval Rouge et Or 2-1 Saturday afternoon in the second semi-final of the 2008 CIS men's soccer championship at Carleton University's Ravens' Field to earn the right to battle the York Lions in Sunday's national final.

"This is a group of kids who finds a way to get it done. We weathered a storm in the first half were able to create chanced in the second half," said TWU head coach Al Alderson." "Except for the one error our back line and goalkeeper played great, which is critical for us to be in this final game...it is a huge testament for to what they have done."
Paul Hamilton, a third-year defender from Calgary, headed home the game-winning goal in the 67th minute off a Mustafa Demirci corner kick. "We designed the play for Paul to score. It was a beautiful goal and I'm so happy for him. He was an absolute force all game long," said Alderson about his All-Canadian defender.
Following a scoreless first half, Trinity Western took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute of play when sophomore forward Daniel Lowen of Langley, B.C., sent a beautiful strike in the top right corner of the net from 25 yards out. "Dan did a great job of creating a goal all by himself and bent a beautiful ball into the top of the corner," commented Alderson on the opening goal.
Laval tied the affair only one minute later however when all-Canadian Alexandre Lévesque-Tremblay of Baie-Saint-Paul, Que., found the back of the net on a low shot to the right corner from just outside the box.
The Canada West finalist Spartans advance to the national final for the second time since joining CIS in 2001. They dropped a 1-0 decision to Alberta in the 2006 title match.
Trinity Western will face York Sunday at 3 p.m. York blanked Montreal 1-0 earlier Saturday in the first semi-final.
The QSSF finalist Rouge et Or hope to claim a second straight CIS medal when they face Montreal Sunday at 12 p.m. in a rematch of last Sunday's Quebec final, won 1-0 by the Carabins. Laval, which joined CIS in 2000, captured silver a year ago, losing 2-1 to UBC in the championship match.
