VIKES CANADA WEST CHAMPIONS AFTER 4-1 WIN
-TWU's Kowan sets school record in loss

VICTORIA - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team did not get their fourth straight Canada West title as they fell to the No. 5 ranked University of Victoria Vikes 4-1 Saturday evening at the University of Victoria.

Despite the loss the Spartans, who have had a tumultuous year, will have another crack at obtaining a CIS Championship this coming week as the Canada West No. 2 team behind the Canada West Champion Vikes.

The home side used the 250 fans at Centennial Stadium to their advantage on Saturday night, as they would jump all over their opposition from the get go. Their first goal would come in the 16th minute, after Kyle Kostis rose above the Spartans defense to head home a cross from Jeffrey Hagen.

The Vikes would double their lead in the 32nd, with Sean Glanville volleying home a loose ball off a Vikes corner.

The Spartans, who locked up their trip to Nationals after their 2-1 penalty kick victory over the No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds Friday night, were unable to turn the momentum in their favour in the second half, as the Vikes would score twice more in the final 45 minutes.

Rounding out the scoring for the home side was midfielders Corey Sanford and William Gye. Sanford would score just three minutes into the second half, letting a low bullet go that eluded the Spartans 'keeper Andrew Kowan (2nd year, Richmond, B.C.). Gye found his way on to the score sheet in the 75th minute, converting on a penalty kick after James Rhodes was hauled down in the box.

Spartans midfielder James Faremhorst (1st year, Langley, B.C.) would add a late marker in the 87th minute to break Vikes 'keeper Dan Kilpatrick shutout bid. The Vikes 'keeper still managed to turn away 13 shots in the victory. Kowan made 15 saves to take the lost. The 15 saves is a TWU single game record. Kowan passes former Spartan Jacob Hanson (Powell River, B.C.) who made 11 saves in a 1-0 win against the University of Calgary Dinos on Oct. 29, 2005.

Both teams will now prepare for the CIS National Championships, being held at Carleton University in Ottawa. The tournament, which gets underway this Thursday Nov. 6, will feature the top eight teams in the country in a single-elimination tournament to decide Canadian university soccer supremacy.

Joining the Vikes and Spartans in Ottawa, are the host Carleton Ravens, the Laurier Golden Hawks (OUA), York Lions (OUA), Laval rouge et Or (QUA), Montreal Carabins (QUA) and the winner of the AUS final between Dalhousie and the University of New Brunswick.
