TWU Spartans (0) vs. the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HUSKIES SHOCK SPARTANS

CHILLIWACK, British Columbia - Jerson Barandica-Hamilton scored in the 25th minute to give the University of Saskatchewan a shocking 1-0 win over the Trinity Western University men's soccer team Friday night at Exhibition Park in Chilliwack, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 5-4-3, while the win moves the Huskies to 3-6-2 and keeps their dreams of the post season alive.

Barandic-Hamilton scored when he took a ball into the TWU penalty area, weaved his way through a couple of Spartan defenders and then cut a high hard shot into the top of the TWU net from just outside the left corner of the Spartan six yard box.

The play for the remainder of the half saw both teams with equal control of the play, but neither was able to get a ball past the goal line as the Huskies ended the first 45 minutes with a one goal lead.

The second half saw a continuation of equal possession and scoring opportunities for each squad. Then in the 74 minute the momentum shifted significantly towards Trinity Western.

The Spartans spent most of the final 15 minutes inside the Huskies penalty area, but even with six corner kicks and four shots in a flurry of action Trinity Western was unable to find the equalizer.

TWU keeper Andrew Kowan (3rd year, Richmond, B.C.) made five saves in the loss, while Saskatchewan keeper Mark Diakiw made four saves in the shut-out victory

The quest for the play-offs is extremely tight, with four schools vying for the two remaining spots. Trinity Western University currently sits in third spot with 18 points, Alberta is in fourth with 16 points, Fraser Valley in is in fifth spot with 15 points and Saskatchewan is in sixth spot with 11 points. Saskatchewan is the only team that needs help to make the post season. TWU, Alberta and UFV each control their own destiny. Alberta can gain as many as 28 points on the season, which would secure them one of the two remaining spots. While Spartans and the Cascades appear destined to battle it out right down to the final match of the season, unless Saskatchewan wins out, whoever wins the final match between TWU and UFV will secure the final play-off spot.

The Huskies will play the University of the Fraser Valley tomorrow afternoon at Abbotsford, B.C.'s Bateman Park, while the Spartans will battle the University of Alberta Golden Bears tomorrow in a match that is scheduled for a 6:15 p.m. start at TWU in Langley, B.C.

Match Notes: TWU outshot Saskatchewan 14-9...and had the edge in corner kicks at 10-1...
