CLAN TAKE SPARTANS IN FRIENDLY

BURNABY, British Columbia - Wednesday night the Trinity Western University men's soccer team traveled to Burnaby to face the Simon Fraser University Clan in a non-conference match-up. The Clan came out on top 4-1 in a match that counted towards SFU's potential berth at the NAIA championship, but is considered a non-conference friendly for the Spartans.

"Great day for us to get our bench some experience and significant minutes and give some of our starters some much needed rest," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "Except for a few miscues that led to goals I thought our guys did a good job and showed us what they are capable of."

The win moves the Clans overall record to 8-4 on the year, while the Spartans fall to 9-5-2 overall and 5-2-2 in Canada West.

SFU opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Barrett was able to tip in a misplayed cross by the TWU defence following a Stefano Pannu (Burnaby, B.C.) pass into the 18-yard box. Barrett had another change less than a minute later; however Spartans keeper Tyler DeJong (3rd year, Abbotsford, B.C.) was able to challenge Barrett and make the save.

Tom Lowndes (Undy, Wales) set up Liam Miller (Burnaby, B.C.) on the Clan's second goal, sending a cross up the middle of the pitch that DeJong misplayed, allowing Miller to get behind DeJong and have an exposed goal to attack freely in the 33rd minute.

The Spartans closed the gap to 2-1 before the half after forward David Rowse (4th year, St. Albert, Alta.) headed a long free kick from Jake Jorgensen (2nd year, Bellingham, Wash.) passed SFU keeper Thomas Lindley (Seabright, N.S.) in the 43rd minute when Lindley pinched to make a play on the free kick.

Barrett added the Clan's third goal in the 70th minute, heading a Pannu corner kick past DeJong to the far right post. The corner kick was set up by a field long goal kick from Lindley that DeJong was forced to push out of bounds. Barrett secured a hat trick a little over two minutes later, beating DeJong to the low left corner after receiving a cross from Todd Lucyk (White Rock, B.C.).

Tyler DeJong in his first match of the season with the Spartans, made three saves in the loss, while SFU's Thomas Lindley made one save to earn the win.

Next up for the Spartans are conference road games against the University of Victoria on Sat. Oct. 11 at 2:15 p.m. in Victoria and against the University of British Columbia on Sun. Oct. 12 at 2:15 p.m. in Vancouver.

Match Notes: SFU out shot TWU 20-to-4, including 7-to-2 in shots on goal... The Clan had a 7-to-3 edge in corner kicks...Earlier in the year TWU defeated SFU 5-to-1 at TWU...the Spartans sat starters: keeper Andrew Kowan, defenders Paul Hamilton and Liam McAllister, midfielders Israel Jones and Pat Kelly and forward Adrian Kekec...
