SPARTANS GET WIN IN DINO TOWN

CALGARY - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team used a strong second half to power themselves to a well earned 3-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday afternoon in Calgary.
The win moves the 4-2-2 Spartans into third place in Canada West, while the loss drops the 1-6-2 Dinos into seventh spot.

"We had a great second half, which allowed us to come away with a win," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "It is never easy to play in Calgary and for us to come away with a decisive win is great for our team."

A late first half goal, 43rd minute, by TWU forward Daniel Lowen (2nd year, Langley, B.C.) seemed to deflate the Dinos spirit, as Calgary returned to the field after the break with little energy. "We eased our way in to the game today, which is not what you want as a coach, and we were fortunate to be in the game and up 1-0 at the half, when we probably didn't deserve to be in the lead," commented Alderson.

The Spartans took full advantage of the Dinos in the second half, scoring two more for extra insurance, with Adrian Kekec (5th year, Burnaby, B.C.) in the 65th minute and Jordan Hart (3rd year, Bellingham, Wash.) in the 79th minute finding the back of the net.

Calgary had an early goal disallowed, but other then the one opportunity they had difficulty cracking the Trinity Western defense and getting any sustained pressure in the Spartans end of the park. "Our back line played great today. Not only were they able to shut down Calgary's attack in the second half they also did a fine job in service, which allowed us to sustain our attacking pressure on Calgary," said Alderson.

Trinity Western keeper Andrew Kowan (2nd year, Richmond, B.C.) made five saves to record the victory, with Calgary's J.P. Crescenzi (3rd, Calgary) making three saves in the loss.

The Spartans will pack up and travel south to Lethbridge to face the Pronghorns on Sunday afternoon. Lethbridge fell 5-2 to Fraser Valley today and at 1-7-1 are currently in last place in Canada West. "I'm hoping that we can carry our second half performance into tomorrows match in Lethbridge," added Alderson.

Match Notes: TWU out-shot Calgary 18-8....the Dinos had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks - all in the first half...
