VIKES SHUT-OUT SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia Three minutes midway through the second half made the difference in tonight's men's soccer match between No. 3 ranked Trinity Western University and the visiting University of Victoria. The Vikes scored two goals in the 180 seconds on their way to defeating the Spartans 3-0 Saturday night in Langley, B.C.

The first half was a closely marked affair with both teams limiting opportunities for their opponent. The Vikes had a slight edge in chances as they out-shoot the Spartans five to three, but the teams remained tied, 0-0 after the opening 45 minutes.

Both teams looked more settled to start the second half. They each worked to build quality chances. Then in the 57th and the 60th minute of the match Victoria's Sean Glanville and Jordie Oberg scored to change the game for the Vikes. The assist on both goals went to Jeffrey Hagen.

Despite being down a player and down two goals the Spartans pushed hard and buzzed around the Vikes end of the park for a good portion of the second half but were unable to get one past Victoria's Dan Kilpatrick.

Victoria's James Rhodes took the wind out of TWU in the 83rd minute when he knocked in a rebound to make the final 3-0 for the visitors.

TWU's Andrew Kowan (Richmond, B.C.) faced eight shots and made five saves in the loss while Victoria's Kilpatrick made eight saves to record the shutout victory. The Vikes fired a total of 11 shots at the Spartans goal, while TWU sent 14 at the Victoria net.

Both teams experienced frustration throughout the match as the man in the middle handed out eight cards, including one ejection to each squad.

The Vikes move to 2-1-0 on the year, while the Spartans fall to 2-2-0. The Spartans are now on the road as they travel to the prairies for matches against the University of Alberta and the University of Saskatchewan, while the Vikes will head down Hwy 1 to Abbotsford, B.C. to battle the Fraser Valley Cascades tomorrow afternoon.

Match Notes: TWU midfielder Patrick Kelly (Cochrane, Alta.) had two yellow cards and left the match in the 59th minute, while UVIC's Sean Glanville received a red card in the 83rd minute...TWU is 5-8-3 life-time against the Victoria...it is the first time the Spartans have lost at home to the Vikes since a 2-1 loss in 2002...
