THUNDERBIRDS STRONG START STOPS SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The visiting University of British Columbia Thunderbirds did something that they have not done in two years and only once since Sept. of 2001 - beat the Spartans on their home field. Tonight the Thunderbirds came out hard to change their fortunes on Spartan Field and that is just what they did as they dominated the match on their way to a 2-0 win Thursday evening. UBC's Nick Poole (Mission, B.C.) and Ryan Reynolds (North Delta, B.C.) were the difference makers as the 5th ranked Thunderbirds got their first win of the season and move to 1-0-2, while dropping the 3rd ranked Spartans to 2-1-0.

After the game TWU head coach had difficulty commenting on his teams play, "We didn't play well at all. You cannot expect to win in Canada West when you don't have anybody show up. We had three guys show up last week and we managed to get a win [1-0 over Calgary], but you can't do that against UBC."

The game had everything you would expect from a clash between these two Canada West soccer titans, with flashes of brilliance on offence and in the net, hard tackling, numerous - six - yellow cards, and a fair amount of blood spilled under the lights at Spartan field.

The game began with the Thunderbirds controlling the play and coming hard at the Spartans. UBC defender Tyson Keam (Langley, B.C.) looked to have the first goal of the match in the 17 minute, but a full-stretched TWU keeper Andrew Kowan (2nd year, Richmond, B.C.) would keep the score level, making a fantastic save on the difficult long range attack.

A minute later, Reynolds would be fouled inside the penalty area by third-year Spartan defender Paul Hamilton (3rd year, Calgary) resulting in a penalty kick for UBC. Once again Kowan came up big as he dove hard to his right to punch out Graham Smith's (Abbotsford, B.C.) penalty kick.

Poole would be on the end of a play that began with Devin Gunenc (North Vancouver, B.C.) free kick from 40 yards out in the 24th minute. A long cross played to the back post would be met by Jason's Gill head and played back to the front of the net. Poole would elevate above TWU defender Jake Jorgenson (2nd year, Bellingham, B.C.) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The ‘Birds would add to their tally ten minutes later on a very similar play to their first goal.

A cross deep into the box from left back Joey Loreth (Victoria) would be redirected towards the net and off a TWU player by forward Marco Visintin (Vancouver). Reynolds would clean up the free ball and deposit it into the open net to give UBC the 2-0 lead.

UBC's Srdjan Djekanovic (Vancouver) made five saves and played to the full frame to pick up his first win of the season, while Kowan made four saves to record his first loss of the season.

UBC was assessed 25 fouls, including two yellows, on the night with the hosts getting 21 and four cautions.

Match Notes: TWU is 7-6-4 lifetime against UBC and 5-3-2 at TWU....other than today the Spartans only losses in Langley were 1-0 on Sept. 9, 2006 and 3-1 on Sept 13, 2001 - TWU's first every match in Canada West...Their was a moment of silence before the match in remembrance of 9-11...
