TWU Spartans (4) vs. the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOWEN LEADS SPARTANS
TWU opens with impressive 4-1 win

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The No. 5 ranked Trinity Western University men's soccer team scored three goals in four minutes on their way to defeating the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 4-1 Friday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus. TWU forward Daniel Lowen (2nd year, Langley, B.C.) led the way for the Spartans with two goals and an assist in the three goal victory.

It was the Canada West season opener for both teams. The win puts TWU at 1-0-0, while the loss drops Lethbridge to 0-1-0

Lowen opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Forward Garrett Traversy (Delta, B.C.) and midfielder Patrick Kelly (Cochrane, Alta.) set Lowen up with a through ball which put the lanky forward around the back Pronghorn defender and in alone. Lowen slotted the ball into the lower right corner to put TWU up 1-0.

A minute later Lowen struck again. TWU defender Paul Hamilton (3rd year, Calgary) sent a through ball up to Lowen who hit a hard volley past a diving Colin Pattison (Calgary) and into the centre of the Pronghorn net.

In the 13th minute TWU made it a 3-0 lead when midfielder Nathan Square-Briggs (4th year, Richmond, B.C.) picked up a rebound in the centre of the box and hit it off the centre of the cross-bar and down into the Lethbridge net.

Lethbridge got on the score sheet in the 29th minute. Forward Jaycee Neufeld (Saskatoon) took a cross that was set up by Midfielder's Dylan Tooby (Calgary) and Marcus Johnston (Lethbridge, Alta.) and headed it past a diving Andrew Kowan (2nd year, keeper, Richmond, B.C.) and into the far corner of the Spartans net.

The Spartans outshot the Pronghorns 10-3 as the half ended with the home team up 3-0.

Both teams battled for control through out the second half. Each team had quality chances but neither was able to find the back of the net.

Forward David Rowse (4th year, St. Albert, Alta.) sealed the win for TWU when he scored in the 85th minute. Defender Branden McLean (1st year, South Delta, B.C.) sent a through ball into the Pronghorns end and Rowse beat the Lethbridge defenders in a foot race from just over half. Rowse took the ball and went in alone and lifted the ball over a charging Pattison and into the back of the net.

Andrew Kowan made one save to earn the win for the Spartans, while Colin Pattison made four saves in the Pronghorn loss.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday, September 6. Match time at TWU is set for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: There was a 10 minute lighting delay at half-time...TWU outshot Lethbridge 15-7 and had an 8-2 edge in shots on goal...TWU is now 14-1 lifetime against Lethbridge...the Spartans were without the services of forward Adrian Kekec (5th year, Burnaby, B.C.), who was sitting out due to a red card violation in the final match of last years CIS championships...
