SPARTANS RALLY FOR WIN IN FINAL PRE-SEASON MATCH

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team scored three straight goals for a come from behind 3-1 victory over Portland's Concordia University Cavaliers Wednesday afternoon at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.

The win improves the Spartans to 4-2-0, while the loss drops the Cavaliers to 0-2-0.

The Spartans fell behind in the 24th minute when Ryan Hill chipped a ball from the deep right side of the pitch. Unfortunately for the Spartans TWU keeper Andrew Kowan (1st year, Richmond, B.C.) was unable to handle the shot as it went off of his hands and into the lower left corner of the TWU net. It would be the only time that the Cavaliers would find the back of the Spartans net.

TWU tied the match up just 11 minutes (35th) later when Jordan Hart (3rd year, Bellingham, Wash.) headed a Garrett Traversy (1st year, forward, Delta, B.C.) cross from the left corner of the park past Concordia keeper Garrett Staples and into the right side of the Cavaliers net.

In the 44th minute TWU's David Lowen (Langley, B.C.) used his head to put the Spartans up for 2-1 at the half. The second year forward went high over the Cavaliers defenders and headed a ball, which Traversy had lofted from just inside centre, into the right side of the Concordia net to give TWU the lead for good.

In the second half Concordia kept pressing to get the equalizer, but were unable to find the back of the TWU net.

Then in extra time the Spartans' David Rowse (4th year, St. Albert, Alta.) was able to seal the win for TWU. TWU's midfielder James Farenhorst (1st year, Langley, B.C.) started the play in the centre of the park when he went high to head the ball towards the Concordia net. The ball found Rowse who as able to go in alone on the Concordia net. Staples came charging out to stop Rowse, but he was too late as the TWU forward was able to chip the ball over the charging keeper and into the net to give the Spartans the 3-1 victory.

Kowan made one save to earn the win for the Spartans, while Staples made four saves in the Cavaliers loss.

Next up for the Spartans is Canada West conference action on Fri. Sept. 5 and Sat. Sept. 6 against the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge. Match time on both nights is set for 7 p.m.

Match Notes: TWU outshot Concordia 12-9 and had the edge in corner kicks 8-5...the match was a non-conference match for TWU, but it was a "counter" for the NAIA's Concordia...
