SPARTANS SLIP PAST DINOS
-TWU drops Calgary in pre-season tune-up

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University's Goran Vitic (3rd year, midfield, Surrey, B.C.) scored the lone goal in the 8th minute as the Spartans men's soccer team defeated the visiting University of Calgary Dinos 1-0 in a cold and wet pre-season match-up Tuesday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.

Vitic scored his second goal of the season when he was set up on a through ball by team-mate Daniel Loewen (2nd year, forward, Langley, B.C.). Vitic took the pass up the left centre of the Calgary zone to go in alone on the Dinos Michael Arnieri (Edmonton). Arnieri had no chance as Vitic slid the ball into the lower right corner of the Calgary net.

For a late August match the weather did not cooperate as both teams had to persevere through heavy rains in cool and breezy conditions. The Spartans had the slight edge in play throughout the majority of the match as they outshot the Dinos 13-3.

Dino midfielder Devin Delany (Vancouver) looked like he had the equalizer in the 49th minute, but his hard shot from the top of the box rang off of the Spartans right goal post. The ensuing rebound was cleared out of danger by the Spartan defenders.

TWU keeper Andrew Kowan (1st year, Richmond, B.C.) made one save to earn his first win of the season, while Calgary's Michael Arnieri made three saves in the loss.

The two teams will meet again in just over a week as they open Canada West conference play at TWU on Fri. Sept. 5.

Next up for the Spartans is a match Wed. afternoon against Portland's Concordia University. The match is set for a 1 p.m. kick-off at TWU. The match is the Spartans final match of the pre-season.
