TWU Spartans (2) vs. the Seattle Pacific University Falcons (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS RALLEY FOR FIRST WIN
-Two late goals give TWU win over SPU

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University forwards Jordan Hart (3rd year, Bellingham, Wash.) and Daniel Lowen (2nd year, Langley, B.C.) made the most of their minutes late in Saturday's 2-1 win over Seattle Pacific University. The two forwards substituted into the match late in the second half and figured in on both of the Spartans goals as TWU scored twice in the final six minutes to earn their first W of the season.

SPU opened the scoring in the 11th minute on a goal by midfielder Tyler Schultz (Scottsdale, Ariz.). Fellow midfielder Alec Nelson (Lynnwood, Wash.) set up the goal with a nice pass from the far left side of the Spartan zone that went across the centre of the TWU box to Schultz. Schultz took the pass and went in alone and slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the TWU net.

TWU forward Nathan Pogue (4th year, Seaside, Ore.) almost tied the match in the 20th minute when his shot from just inside the top of the box rang off of the SPU crossbar.

The Falcons controlled much of the play for the remainder of the half and went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans pressured midway through the second half. As number of TWU players had good looks but were unable to find the net or get the ball past SPU keeper Kaleb Kuehn (Marysville, Wash.).

Fortune struck for the Spartans in the 81st minute when Daniel Lowen subbed in. Two minutes later Lowen took a perfect cross from Jordan Hart, who had subbed in minutes earlier, and headed it toward the lower left corner of the SPU net. Once again Kuehn was there to make the diving save, but this time he could not contain the rebound as TWU forward David Rowse (4th year, St. Albert, Alta.) jumped on the rebound and tied the match up in the 84th minute.

Three minutes later Lowen got his own when he took a perfect thru ball from Hart. Lowen split the centre and left back and went in alone on Kuehn. Lowen touched the ball around Kuehn and placed the ball squarely into the open SPU net to give the home team their first win of the season.

TWU keepers Andrew Fink (2nd year, Burnaby, B.C.), who played the first half, and Andrew Kowan (1st year, Richmond, B.C.), who played the second, earned the win for the Spartans, while SPU keeper Ben Lovelace (Cupertino, Calif.), first half, and Kaleb Kuehn, second half, split the goal keeping duties for the Falcons.

Next up for the Spartans is against the Simon Fraser University Clan on Wed. Aug. 20. Match time at TWU is set for 7 p.m.

Match Notes: TWU outshot SPU 13-9 and had the edge in corner kicks 7-2...
