SHEARON PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University Director of Athletics Murray Hall and men's soccer head coach Pat Rohla are pleased to announce that after nine seasons, 1998-2002, 2004-current, as assistant coach Mike Shearon will be promoted to Associate Head Coach to begin the 2009 season.

"What a gem we have in Mike," commented Hall. "Mike has a wonderful skill-set that bolsters our Complete Champion ApproachTM on and off the pitch. His strategic thinking, long range visioning and positive culture-setting orientation will be a great addition to the men's soccer program and our entire Spartans staff".

Shearson, who hails from Macedonia, Ohio and currently resides in Langley, B.C., will join newly appointed head coach Pat Rohla to lead the Spartans into the 2009 season when they will be hosting the 2009 CIS men's soccer championship.

"Mike is a top class person, with excellent coaching acumen. His leadership and vision for the program will be instrumental in moving MSOC to new levels," commented Rohla. "Mike provides a consistent and stable influence. The players naturally gravitate to him for advice and sound reasoning. I know TWU has made the correct decision in Mike's appointment as he is a keystone for the program."

Shearon has an extensive coaching resume. He has over 11 years experience in coaching youth soccer camps and was the director of AIA Soccer Camps from 1998-2003. At the university and club level Shearon has coached the Kopion FC Youth team from 1995-1997, was the JV and scouting coach with Wheaton College in 1996, the assistant coach at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapid, MI in 1997, the head coach of the Fraser Valley Action U21 team in 2001 and 2005 and head coach of the Fraser Valley Action PCSL team in 2007.

He has also coached a number teams on international tours. In 2000 he took a men's team to Ireland, in 2004 he took a men's team to Albania and a women's team to Ireland and in 2008 he took a men's team to South Africa.

In addition to his work with the Spartans Shearon works with Athletes in Action where he is a part of the National Leadership Team and runs the Communications and Media De¬partment, as well as the International Soccer Tour Ministry.

Shearon, who graduated from Wheaton College in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in En¬vironmental Science degree, played club soccer with Cleveland Internation¬als and played university soccer for the Wheaton College Thunder (Wheaton, IL) from 1992-95 where he was named All-CCIW (College Conference of Il¬linois and Wisconsin) in 1994 and '95.

This fall Trinity Western will be the proud hosts of the 2009 CIS men's soccer championships. With their host position the Spartans will set a TWU school record with five straight CIS men's soccer championship appearances. The Spartans have won three national championship medals (silver in 2008 and 2006 and bronze in 2005, they were fifth in 2007), and have finished as Canada West regular season champions in 2003, 2004, and 2007. They also won three straight Canada West Championships in 2005, 2006, and 2007, before finishing with silver in 2008.
