How Do I Fund My M.A.?

Funding for qualified students comes from a combination of scholarships, grants, and teaching and research assistantships:

$17,500 SHRCC Scholarships for Canadian Graduate Students

Every year, Canadian graduate students who are not yet in their Thesis Year of the M.A. program may apply for a $17,500 SHRCC scholarship. M.A. in Biblical Studies students Scott Bailey (10-11), Andrew Perrin (08-09), Ted Erho (06-07), Fred Tappenden (05-06), and Shawn Flynn (04-05) have won this prestigious award .

Canada Research Chair in Dead Sea Scrolls Studies Research Assistantship, 2012-2013.

Trinity Western University invites applications for two (2) Research Assistantships of up to $12,000 per year (up to $6,000 per semester) for the Canada Research Chair in Dead Sea Scrolls Studies in conjunction with TWU's M.A. in Biblical Studies. Assistantship recipients are expected to have some interest in the Dead Sea Scrolls, although their main area of concentration may be in Biblical Studies, Old Testament, New Testament, or Second Temple Judaism.

One of these Research Assistantships will be for a student in the first year of study in the M.A. in Biblical Studies, and the other will be for a student in the second year of study. Students receiving the Assistantship in the first year may have it renewed for a second year, depending on successful progress in their academic studies and research work.

Recipients are required to assist the Canada Research Chair with various research projects in collaboration with the Canada Research Chair in Dead Seas Scrolls studies from September to April. Additional work as a research assistant may be available during the summer months as well.

Duties mainly involve research projects being conducted by the Canada Research Chair, such as the preparation and checking of editions, articles, books, and tools on the Scrolls, the Bible, and other aspects of Second Temple Judaism. Duties may also include activities suited to each Assistantship recipient's interests - for example, working with computer software such as Accordance or the TLG database, or the transfer of Dead Sea Scrolls material into media such as PowerPoint. Recipients will also help with occasional special events such as Dead Sea Scrolls conferences or a visiting Professor. Further information may be obtained from Dr. Peter W. Flint (flint@twu.ca).

Applications will be reviewed beginning Wednesday, February 15, 2012, and remain open until a determination is made. Applicants are advised to ensure that all of their materials arrive by February 15th, 2012.

Trinity Western University Scholarships and Bursaries

Dean's Scholarships, up to $5000

Each year Dean's scholarships of up to $5000 are available to students who apply to the M.A. in Biblical Studies. Visit http://www.twu.ca/awards/ for information on TWU scholarships, grants, and loans for students from Canada and from the U.S.

Teaching Assistant Positions

Every student enrolled in the M.A. in Biblical Studies may apply to be a teaching assistant for one of the M.A. Faculty. In past years, we have been successful in matching professors to all graduate students who have applied. Students are paid an hourly rate for tasks such as grading undergraduate paper and exams or teaching a class when the professor is away. Needless to say, the benefits and experience gained from the Professor-Teaching Assistant mentoring relationship far outweigh even the benefits of financial remuneration!

For inquiries or to register interest in applying for a Teaching Assistant position, please contact the director of the MABIB program, Dr. Tony Cummins (tony.cummins@twu.ca), Professor of Religious Studies.
