Robert Calnan, MEd, RN

Biography

Calnan has recently retired from his position as Site Manager for Cowichan District Hospital, a 120 bed acute care hospital. He has served in management positions in health care since 2001, and served on faculty at Camosun College from 1989 to 2001.

In Canadian nursing circles, Calnan is best known for his successful tenure as the President of the Canadian Nurses Association (2002-04).  The first male President of CNA, Calnan also served on a number of professional provincial, national and international nursing societies, including as President of the Registered Nurses Association of BC, Co-Chair of the Association of Registered Nurses of BC and Canadian representative to the International Council of Nurses and the World Health Organization.

Calnan became formally associated with the TWU School of Nursing in 2015 when he served as a Leader-in-Residence for NURS 550 (Health Policy) at the Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa.  Here his connections to individuals and organizations involved with health policy have been invaluable. In addition in 2015 Calnan has been a course instructor for NURS 621:  Perspectives in Nursing Leadership, an online elective course for MSN students.
