About Us
At TWU, we have the privilege of walking alongside students on their journey in understanding their calling and developing more fully into who God has created them to be.
We focus on discovering, equipping, and launching students into careers that they love. By elevating the calling that God has on their lives, we aim for students to find clarity and purpose in their careers and live lives they love. We actively ask life-defining questions to encourage and challenge students to think deeply about questions such as WHO AM I, WHAT DO I BELIEVE, AND WHAT AM I CALLED TO DO IN THE WORLD?
“In Designing Your Life” by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, the authors reframed the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” to “Who or what do you want to grow into?” We want to deconstruct the myth that you need to figure out one “best possible” plan or career. Figuring out career options and identifying your vocation doesn’t just happen—it involves curiosity, exploration, and discernment about the multiple pathways forward.
Alongside these important steps, our office will provide practical applications, experiences, and opportunities for students to explore and become equipped to move into a career they love.
What We Do
Preparation is essential for students to be equipped to pursue their plans for the future and make a meaningful difference in the world.
The roadmap will look different for everyone based on their starting point and what they are striving to achieve within their university experience. However, there are some core components for each student during their time in university.
We want every student to:
- DISCOVER: Invest in the process of discovery in learning to explore their interests, values, and gifts—and the challenges they are excited about tackling in the world.
- EQUIP: Guide students to build and then articulate their competencies and skills. Encourage them to engage in relevant experiential learning, workshops, fairs, and jobs to prototype career possibilities.
- LAUNCH: Build a supportive network of professional connections, finalize their resumé and LinkedIn profile, and understand how to articulate themselves and their experiences in interviews.
We walk alongside students as they DISCOVER who they are, what they believe, and what they are called to do in the world. We EQUIP them with tools, resources, connections, and experiences that will LAUNCH them well into their future career.
What is Calling?
In Oz Guiness' book, "The Call", he articulates the Christian framework around calling as two main callings - a primary and secondary. The primary call is the call to a personal relationship with God, which is the foundation of all other calls. We are called to partner with God in the reconciliation of all things. The secondary call is to a specific vocation or mission or purpose in life. It is an expression of one's unique gifts, passions, interests, and values activated to make a positive difference in the world.
The framework we established to guide people into discovering a vocational calling is simply this:
Discover who you are and the needs of the world or challenges you want to work towards solving and look for work that addresses both.
