TWU student wins prestigious Fessenden-Trott Scholarship

Trinity Western University International Studies major, Brayden Koslowsky, is the recipient of the prestigious Fessenden-Trott Scholarship valued at $27,000 over three years. The scholarship selection committee, administered by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), selected Koslowsky from an exclusive group of students – each institution within the AUCC could only put forward one nominee.

“The scholarship is extremely competitive with only four awards given out nation-wide,” says Erin Chapman, TWU’s Associate Director of Financial Aid, “Needless to say, Brayden’s application was very impressive.” Koslowsky submitted academic and community reference letters – one from Rick Stewart, a detective with the Abbotsford police – along with a personal essay on his community involvement.

A seasoned baseball umpire, Koslowsky umpired over 65 games this summer and even mentored other young umpires. In his second-year at TWU, Koslowsky is a resident assistant in Douglas Hall and sings in the TWU chamber choir. “[The choir] is a huge part of my heritage,” he says. “I’m looking forward to singing in the choir along with my grandpa at the Chan Centre this Christmas.”

He has his sights set on studying at TWU’s Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa in his fourth year but right now is focused on getting the most out of his academic experience at home. “I love to learn and school is a joy,” he says. “I could have a goal of a 4.0 GPA but, when it comes down to it, that’s just number. I want to learn the best way to live my life and how to glorify God in the process.”

To earn money for school, last summer Koslowsky worked in Parks and Maintenance for the city of Abbotsford. While he enjoyed working for the city, he feels this scholarship will enable him to be more intentional with his summer activities. “This year I’m looking at doing an internship or a mission,” says Koslowsky. He is thrilled that this award will alleviate money struggles during his tenure at TWU and allow him to focus on personal growth and helping others.
