Faith and Nursing Symposium
On June 12th, 2010, Trinity Western University’s School of Nursing, along with Nurses Christian Fellowship (NCF) will host its second nursing symposium, this time at TWU’s Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa. Entitled, For Such a Time As This: Faith and Nursing Symposium, the event features keynote speaker Sonya Grypma, Ph.D., noted author and associate professor at TWU. The aim of the event is to bring together nurses from across Canada for a national conversation on how faith and nursing inform each other.
“We are interested in building a community of nurses who are thoughtful about faith and nursing,” says TWU School of Nursing Professor Sheryl Reimer-Kirkham, Ph.D. “Conversations about spirituality and religion are occurring in many different arenas today, with thought being given to their role in public spheres.”
In addition to the address by Grypma, the all-day symposium features a morning workshop on spiritual care giving in the context of pluralism with Reimer-Kirkham and Rick Sawatzky, Ph.D., TWU associate professor. “Healthcare is a sphere in which nurses are often unsure of what to do with their own faith perspectives, and how they might interact with colleagues and patients who hold differing values and beliefs,” says Reimer-Kirkham.
In January 2009, TWU’s School of Nursing hosted a similar symposium in Langley, B.C. “I think nurses are looking for opportunities where they can explore challenging questions related to faith, ethics, and nursing,” Reimer-Kirkham says.
