Toronto stops eighth ranked Trinity Western 3-1
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The eighth ranked Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team struggled offensively Tuesday night in their first match of the New Year, dropping a non-conference match 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 25-23) to the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues.
The win moves the Varsity Blues to 20-8 overall, while the loss drops the Spartans to 15-6 overall.
Liz Spear (Langley) with 12 kills and Dayna Jansen Van Doorn (Langley) with 10 kills led the Spartans’ attack. The two middles helped TWU dominate the match at the net as the Spartans finished with 53 kills. Asya Danilova (St. Petersburg, Russia) with 14 kills paced Toronto to 42 kills. Toronto’s Elodie Li Yuk Lo (Toronto) led all players with 18 digs.
The Spartans looked rusty to start the first set and the Blues took full advantage. Toronto quickly jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the first break. TWU responded with a 9-2 run and after a Liz Spear ace the Spartans found themselves with a 13-10 lead. TWU extended the lead to 17-14 before Toronto staged the set wining rally. Paced by Mila Miguel’s (Victoria) four kills the Blues used an 11-6 run to take the set 25-23.
TWU came out flying to start the second set. Saralyn Raugust (Delia, Alta.) led the charge with four kills and four digs as the Spartans jumped out to an early 8-5 lead. The Spartans maintained the lead to the second break when Liz Spear and Danielle Foth (Abbotsford) blocked the Blues’ Mila Miguel to give TWU a 16-13 lead. The two squads played side-out ball for the next six points with TWU maintaining a three point lead, 19-16. Then with TWU up 21-17 Alicia Van Huizen (Surrey) stepped back to serve and four points later she finished the set with an ace to give TWU the 25-17 win, evening the match at one set apiece.
The third set was a battle from the start, with both teams pushing to take control of the set. Setter Anna Paddock’s (Portland, Maine) serving helped the Spartans jump out to an early 8-4 lead at the first break. But Toronto gradually climbed back into the set and after a 12-8 run had tied the set up at 16-16. Each team took turns with the lead as they moved closer to the end of the set. Then with the two teams tied at 21 the visitors from Ontario pushed ahead towards the finish. Toronto used its blocking (three in the set) to outscore the Spartans 4-2 down the stretch to take the set 25-22.
Determined to regain the momentum, Liz Spear’s serving powered TWU out to a 6-0 lead to start the fourth set. The Spartans continued to dominate the set as they moved to the second timeout. TWU’s Anna Paddock gave the Spartans their biggest lead of the match when her service ace gave TWU a 17-10 lead. It looked like the match was headed to a fifth set, but someone forgot to tell Toronto. The Blues scrambled back into the set and after 13 points they had tied the set at 20-20 on the back of a 10-3 run. The two teams battled back and forth for the next six points and remained tied at 23. Toronto then took the set and the match with back-to-back kills by Asya Danilova and Mila Miguel gave the Blues the 25-23 win.
Next up for the Spartans is Canada West league play against the University of Alberta Pandas on Friday and Saturday, January 6 and 7. Match time on Friday is set for 8 pm and on Saturday at 4 pm.
