NO. 1 TWU SPARTANS (0) VS THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA VIKES (2)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BENCH SEES VALUABLE MINUTES IN LOSS TO VIKES
VICTORIA – Having already clinched first place and home field for the Canada West Final Four the No. 1 Trinity Western University women’s soccer team gave a number of bench player’s valuable experience in a 2-0 loss to the No. 4 University of Victoria Vikes Sunday afternoon in Victoria. The loss drops the Spartans to 11-2-1, while the win gives the Vikes the series sweep and moves Victoria to 9-2-3.
“Not the result we would have wanted, but we got some of our younger players some valuable minutes and we were able to rest some of our starters,” said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “Overall I’m pleased and encouraged with the energy and work rate from our kids and the way they played under tough circumstances.”
Victoria’s Kendra Flock opened the scoring in the 29th minute off of a free kick. The Canada West goal scoring champ hit a shot over TWU’s Veronika Rogina (Langley, B.C.) and into the top left corner of the Spartans net to give Victoria the 1-0 lead.
In the second half Flock assisted on the insurance goal when she sent a through ball to first year Frankee Bencher who beat the Spartans back line to go in alone on the TWU net.
Flock’s goal ended TWU’s team record shutout streak at six full games and 590:33 minutes. The last time that the Spartans gave up a goal was in the 69th minute against Victoria on Oct. 9 in a 2-1 loss. TWU finishes the season with a league best nine shutouts.
The Vikes are the only team in the Canada West to defeat the reigning CIS Champs this season.
Rogina made nine saves in the loss, while Vikes keeper Tanya Jones made three saves to earn the shutout win.
Seeing their first Canada West action of the season for TWU were: Rachel Antoniuk (Langley, B.C.), Meghan McKinnon (Langley, B.C.), Claire Pedersen (Cochrane, Alta.), Marissa Ratzlaff (Aldergrove, B.C.) and Karina Whitmarsh (Langley, B.C.).
Trinity Western will host the Canada West Final Four in Langley on Fri.-Sat., Nov. 7-8.
Match Notes: Sitting out for TWU were Natalie Boyd, Alicia Tesan, Nikki Wright, Daniela Gerig, Jilian Dietrich, Kristen Santema, Tessa Meyer and Colleen Webber… Prior to this season TWU’s program record for consecutive shutouts was four and the school record for consecutive scoreless minutes is 529, both were set in the 2003 season… the Vikes finished the match outshooting the Spartans 18-9…TWU’s 11-2-1 and 34 points are both program bests…the Canada West record is 12-1-3 and 39 points, set by UBC in 2005…
