TWU Spartans (2) vs the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (1)

Spartans Head Into Postseason with Win

Langley, British Columbia –
There is room for improvement, but the Trinity Western University women’s soccer team is gearing up for the postseason nicely. With tonight’s 2-1 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies the Spartans have earned 10 points (out of a possible 15) in their last five games as they finish the Canada West regular season.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when Alexis Heinz (2nd yr, Forward, Surrey, BC) nailed a ball around the wall and into the lower right corner of the net. The Spartans were awarded the free kick because of a Huskie handball just outside the top left corner of the box.

Then in the 11th minute Saskatchewan’s Adrienne Stinson took advantage of a Spartan turnover inside the penalty area. Standing alone in the middle of the box Stinson pounded the ball into the open left side of the Spartans net.

Trinity Western was not discouraged and they continued to push forward. In the 29th minute the Spartans created the break that they needed. TWU forward Ashlee Davison (2nd yr, Maple Ridge, BC) broke down the left side and through the Huskie defenders to go in one v one on the Huskies’ keeper. Saskatchewan’s Rebecca Baker was able to make the save on Davison, but could not control the rebound. The ball sailed off to the right and to TWU forward Emily Bond (1st yr, Langley, BC). With no one to beat, Bond calmly placed the ball into the back of the Saskatchewan net to put the Spartans up for good, 2-1.

The second half saw numerous opportunities for the Spartans, 6 shots and 4 corners, but they failed to add to their lead.

The Spartans end the season in 5th place with a record of 5-7-2, which normally would not qualify them for the postseason. This year the Spartans get an automatic spot, as they are hosting the Canada West playoffs November 1 & 2. TWU will play the 6:00 PM game on Friday night against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, while the 4:00 PM game will see the University of Calgary Dinos square off with the University of Victoria Vikes.
