TWU Spartans (2) at the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (0)
Spartans Growing Strong On Road
Langley, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University women’s soccer made it two wins in a row in game two of their three game road trip with a 2-0 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
It appears that coach Roxburgh’s juggling of positions has proved successful as the Spartans controlled the play for the majority of the match. TWU played a solid all round game as they consistently put pressure on the Huskies back line, while controlling the play in the middle of the field and on their back line.
Alexis Heinz (2nd yr, Midfield, Surrey, BC) had a solid game as she moved from the midfield to the sweeper position. Playing on the back line she was able to control the play and help start the Spartans offense from the back. Ceilidh Beck (5th yr, Defender, Surrey, BC) moved up to the midfield and combined with Angela Trauter (2nd yr, Midfield, Langley, BC) to solidify the already strong midfield.
Ashlee Davison (2nd yr, Forward, Maple Ridge, BC) did not score today, but it was not for a lack of effort. She was turned away on two breakaways and her third effort resulted in Natalie Halcro (1st yr, Midfield, Langley, BC) tapping in the first goal of the match in the 65th minute. Halcro is on a bit of a scoring spree with 3 goals in two games and is making a concerted effort at the Canada West player of the week award.
The Spartans increased their lead 6 minutes later on a total team effort goal that was finished by Katie Smart (2nd yr, Midfield, Surrey, BC). The play began when Stephanie Stewart fed Angela Trauter, who found Davison. Davison then broke into the Huskie backfield to find Katie Smart. Smart took the feed and went in alone on Saskatchewan’s keeper. Then from just outside 10 meters she chipped a hard shot overtop of the keeper and into the top of the Huskie net.
“We came out with intensity, desire and energy today, and we were rewarded for our efforts,” said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh.
The Spartans have a day off before they conclude the road trip in Edmonton, AB against the University of Alberta Pandas. Game time at the U of A is set for 12:00 PM.
