SPARTANS FINISH WITH BRONZE AT DINO CUP

CALGARY – Earlier Saturday, the Trinity Western University Spartans swept aside the Pacific Tigers in straight sets to take the bronze medal (25-18, 25-21, 25-14) at the University of Calgary’s Dino Cup.

Marc Howatson (Victoria) was unstoppable for the Spartans, recording 14 kills on 18 attempts, while Steven Marshall (Abbotsford) and Rudy Verhoeff (Calgary) added eight each.

The Spartans, who finished the round robin in a three way tie for first place at 2-1, where relegated to the bronze medal match based on a lower sets won verse sets lost differential. Calgary was first (2-1; sets 7-4), UCLA was second (2-1; sets 7-4) and TWU was third (2-1; sets 7-5), while Pacific finished fourth at 0-3.

The Trinity Western made good on their two games against the American competition on Friday, beating the UCLA Bruins in straight sets (25-20, 28-26, 25-18) before going down to the wire with the Tigers in their early evening match, winning in the fifth set (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12). The Spartans were led by Aaron VandenBrink (Langley, B.C.) against Pacific, with 16 kills in only 23 attempts through five sets. “UCLA is early in their season, so we earned a lot of points on them from easy plays. We were much better than yesterday,” commented TWU Josephson. “It was a nail bitter against Pacific, but we found a way to get it done. And Aaron was awesome all five sets.”

In their opening match of the tournament on Thursday evening the Spartans fell in four sets to eventual tournament champion Calgary 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-18). TWU’s Marshall led the way with 12 kills, with Josh Doornenbal (Edmonton) contributing 10 and Mikiah Schalk (Red Deer, Alta.) adding nine. Marshall was also the defensive leader with nine digs.

TWU’s Verhoeff was named to the All-Tournament team, where he was joined by Pacific’s Chaz Hindsley, Perrine and Tom Hastings of UCLA, along with Podporin and Graham Vigrass of the champion Dinos. Fourth-year middle David Egan was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
