FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NO. 2 UBC SCORES EARLY AND HANGS ON TO BEAT SPARTANS

VANCOUVER, British Columbia –
The No. 9 Trinity Western men’s soccer team allowed an early goal against local rival and No. 2 ranked UBC and was never able to discover an equaliser as the Thunderbirds pulled out a 1-0 win in an intense and physical affair at Thunderbird Park Friday.

The Thunderbirds Tyson Keam swung a beautiful ball in towards the far post from over 30 yards out on a free kick in the 13th minute and Sean Haley rose above the crowd and headed home what would turn out to be the game winning goal.

The loss, which ends Trinity Western’s six-game unbeaten streak, drops the Spartans record to 4-2-2, which has them tied for second in Canada West with Victoria. The win gives UBC a four-point cushion on top of the Canada West standings at 5-0-3 on the year.

“It was a good game for us overall,” said Spartans coach Pat Rohla. “I thought we had a lot of pressure on them, especially in the second half. After they scored, we weathered the storm and went at them for good patches in the first half and for sure in the second half.

“I’m disappointed with the result but not how we played. We have to learn that games are won and lost in the box and on restarts and we need to better in those aspects.”

Despite having the balance of scoring opportunities in their favour for much of the first half, the Thunderbirds were only able to find the back of the net on the one occasion.

Although UBC had nine shots compared to Trinity Western’s five, all five of the Spartans attempts hit the target, forcing Thunderbirds goalie Richard Meister to make a save on each of them, while only three of UBC’s attempts hit the target. Spartans goalie Andrew Fink finished the game with two saves.

Physicality was the name of the game, as both sides received three cards, including a red to UBC's Kent O'Connor late in the match. Thunderbirds coach Mike Mosher was also ejected from the game after disputing the card to O'Connor.

The Spartans came on strong in the second half as they pressed for the tying goal but ultimately were skunked. Their best opportunity came on a free kick to end the match, but a well-delivered ball into the box was redirected just wide.

Trinity Western's Jordan Whitehead went down with an injury early in the game as a result of one of the many collisions between the two Canada West-leading squads.

Next up for both sides is a road trip against Fraser Valley and Victoria. The next home action for both UBC and Trinity Western is October 21 and 22 against Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Game Notes: The Spartans James Farenhorst, Ioannis Tsoulouhas and Jason Wiens were all shown yellow cards while UBC’s Brandon Bonifacio and Miguel Michelena were given yellow cards while O’Conner got the straight red...there were 25 fouls in total…Trinity Western was called for 12 while UBC was whistled for 13.
