SPARTANS GET SHUTOUT WIN IN EDMONTON

EDMONTON – Trinity Western University defender James Farenhorst scored the lone goal of Saturday afternoon’s match to give the visiting Spartans a 1-0 win over the University of Alberta Golden Bears at Foote Field in Edmonton.The win moves the Spartans to 2-1-1 and into fourth place in Canada West, while the loss drops the Bears to 2-2-1.

“Overall it is a great win. We carried a fare bit of the play in the second half and they came at us after the red card, but we weathered the storm and had full value for the win today,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “Now were off to Saskatchewan where we need to get a win otherwise today is meaningless.”

Farenhorst’s game winner came in the 72nd minute with the assists going to the Spartans Jarvis Ambaka and Ioannis Tsoulouhas on the winning goal.

TWU keeper Andrew Fink made two saves to record the shutout victory, while Alberta’s Jay Vetsch made six saves in the loss.

The Golden Bears ended the game with a 10 to nine shot advantage, while the Spartans had the edge in corner kicks at seven to three.

The Spartans are now off to Saskatchewan for an afternoon match with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Match time in Saskatoon is set for 2 p.m. MST. While Alberta will host the No.2  UBC Thunderbirds, who tied the Huskies 1-1 today, tomorrow afternoon at noon in Edmonton.

Match Notes: Fifth year Shawn Parks made his 2011 debut at centre back after recoving from an offseason injury and was noted by Rohla. “Excellent performances by Mitchel Rohla and Shawn Parks on our back line today,” commented Rohla… after dropping the season opener to UFV the Spartans have earned seven out of a possible nine points in their last three matches…Alberta’s Marcus Johnstone earned a second yellow card, and subsiquent red card, in the 66th minutes to give TWU a man advantage for the remaining 24 minutes and four minutes of extra time...
