SPARTANS DROP FINAL MATCH OF U.S. ROAD-TRIP

PORTLAND – On Sunday afternoon the Trinity Western University men’s soccer team found themselves on the short end of a 1-0 match with the Concordia University Cavaliers as they concluded their preseason road trip through the Pacific Northwest at Delta Park in Portland, Ore.

The loss drops the Spartans to 3-2-0 to finish of  their preseason non-conference schedule.

“We started very strong and came out like gangbusters but missed four quality chances early,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “And we did everything but score in the final minutes, but we can’t play forty minutes and expect a good result. It is a little disappointing but we remain convinced that we can be a good team.”

Trinity Western carried the play in the early going as they finished the first half with a nine to five shot advantage, three of which came in the first four minutes of play. But it was Concordia who was able to finish the first frame with the advantage on the score sheet as the Cavaliers got the only marker of the match in the 41st minute on a penalty kick by midfielder Facundo Dipascuale. Concordia was awarded the PK off of a scramble play in the box, when the ball hit Braden Volkenant’s hand in the penalty area.

The late goal allowed the Cavaliers to carry momentum into the second half as Concordia had a 10 to eight edge in shots over the final 45 minutes. But the Spartans looked to rally late as TWU had a  four to one edge in snots in the final 10 minutes as they pushed for the equalizer.

The Spartans finished the match with a six to four advange in corner kicks. Their final attempt came in the 89th minute off the boat of Mitchell Rohla. Rohla sent the ball into the box to Liam McAllister, who headed the ball toward the Cavaliers net, but his attempt went wide right as the Spartans fell 1-0.

TWU forward Spencer Schmidt led the Spartans with seven shots, three on target, while CU forward Septi Danciu led the Cavaliers with four shots, with one on goal.

The Spartans keeper Andrew Kowan played the full ninety and made six saves in the loss, while the Cavaliers Humberto Soriano made four saves to earn the shutout victory.

Next up for the Spartans is their Canada West home opener on Saturday, September 9. Match time at TWU’s Rogers Park is set for 7 p.m. PST.

Match Notes: The Spartans finished the road trip scoring nine goals, while giving up six…TWU finished with 17 fouls, while Concordia finished with 15…the Cavaliers had seven offsides, while the Spartans had two…
