T.W.U. Spartans (65) vs. the University of Alberta (78)
Rookie Season Over
Langley, British Columbia - It was the end of the home stand and the end of the season. The Trinity Western University men's basketball team hosted the University of Alberta in their final game of the season on February 12. The Spartans gave up points early in the second half to go down double digits, but fought back to make it a game. In the end the Golden Bears prevailed with a 78-65 win.
It was nip and tuck for the first ten minutes, but then Alberta pulled away to a 27-17 lead. The Spartans held on to be down only 32-40 at halftime, but the Golden Bears poured it on early in the second and led the whole way. With under 5 minutes to go the Spartans chipped away at an 18 point lead and cut it to single digits, but could never give Alberta a real scare.
The win sends Alberta to the post-season with a 15-5 record, while the Spartans end their first ever CIAU season with a mark of 4-16.
Nick Maglisceau (Alberta) was again the game's top scorer, as he tossed in 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Josh Hall (TWU) added 16 points in a losing effort. Tyler Coston also scored 14 points for the Spartans. Gary Chapman, in his final game as a Spartan, dished 8 assists scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.
"We had a good effort from the guys tonight, but we just weren't able to convert when we needed to. We would have liked to end the season with a win, but we played tough and I am proud of the way the guys fought back down the stretch," remarked Head Coach Stan Peters.
"Josh played with a lot of heart and again led the team through his actions. It is fitting for Gary to go out with such a well balanced game, as he has been steady for us all year and I think Tyler showed what he is capable of doing in the years to come. Mike Slofstra brought energy off the bench when we needed it and just had a great weekend," noted Peters.
