Alberta Solidifies Hold on #2 National Ranking
Edmonton, Alberta - The Spartan's golden path leads through the Bears. The Trinity Western University men's basketball team faced off with the #2 ranked team in the nation on October 22. The University of Alberta Golden Bears punched a hole in the hopes of the Spartans at the Edmonton Journal Invitational. The 67 -52 victory leaves the Spartans 1-1 in the tournament, after beating Laurentian on October 21.
TWU came out and took the game to Alberta, but hit a flat spot after 6 minutes. The Golden Bears then flew up 14 points and led by 18 at the half. "It was a tough night and foul trouble really hurt us. We battled in the second half and won the half, which showed our great defensive effort," noted Head Coach Stan Peters.
TWU forced 21 turnovers (and only have up 16, their lowest of the season), but were killed by Alberta on the boards. Alberta won that battle 43-24.
"I want to give a lot of credit to the kids tonight. They really hung in there and showed a lot of toughness," added Peters. "Rick (Pridmore) had a very good game for us tonight."
Alberta's Nick Magllsceau led the way with 24 points and Pat Crevolin tossed in 14 for the Golden Bears. TWU was led by Tyler Coston's 14 points, Rick Pridmore's 13 and Gary Chapman's 11.
The Spartans battle the University of Waterloo on October 23 at 4 p.m. (Mt. Time). The Spartans hope to leave the Edmonton Journal Invitational with a winning record.
