English Language Competency Exam

The English Language Competency Exam must be written by all second year students (as well as those transferring to TWU with third-year status), unless they have received a minimum grade of 2.3 (C+) in any two of TWU's ENGL 101, 103, or 104.

The ELCE is offered on the first Friday evening of each Fall and Spring semester. The examination assesses students command of standard English and includes questions which test students' understanding of correct grammar and idiom as well as proficiency in writing (content, form, and organization). For students who fail the exam, remedial measures will be available (including a specially-designed 8-week non-credit remedial writing course).

Fourth year students will not be allowed to register for courses until they have met this graduation requirement.
