English Language Competency Exam
All students intending to graduate from TWU who were admitted prior to Fall 2008 must write and pass the University's English Language Competency Examination (ELCE), unless they have received a minimum grade of 2.3 (C+) in any two of TWU's ENGL 101, 103, or 104 (or equivalent transfer courses).
The ELCE is offered on the first Friday evening of each Fall and Spring semester. The examination assesses students command of standard English and includes questions which test students' understanding of correct grammar and idiom as well as proficiency in writing (content, form, and organization). For students who fail the exam, remedial measures will be available (including a specially-designed 9-week non-credit remedial writing course, ELCE 080).
Beginning in the Fall semester of 2008, students admitted to the University will be required to enroll in WRTG 100 in their first semester of full-time study or upon completing 26 semester hours of part-time study, unless they meet at least one of the criteria outlined in the Undergraduate Admissions section of the 2008-2009 Academic Calendar, and in each successive semester until obtaining a passing mark. Students will be required to successfully pass WRTG 100 prior to enrolling in either ENGL 103 or ENGL 104, and may only enroll in WRTG 100 a third time by permission (see the Office of the Registrar).
