SPARTANS DEFENCE AND ATTACK MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN WIN

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Led by Amy Leschied, with 15 kills and Andrea Ball’s 29 digs the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team got back on the winning track with a hard fought 3-1 win over the visiting University of Winnipeg Friday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

The 25-13, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15 win improves the No. 2 Spartans to a Canada West leading 8-1, while the loss drops the Wesmen to 3-5.

“I believe the majority of the game plan we executed tonight. There are certain things we wanted to on our side and control on our side and I thought we really did that tonight,” commented TWU head coach Ryan Hofer. “Amy played outstanding tonight. We knew we needed to get her a fair amount of volume and we did that and she did a great job of executing.”

“I knew Winnipeg wasn’t going to go away and they worked hard. It wasn’t something where they were just going to let us have a third set. They were going to make us work for it. They picked up their game and took off on a couple serving runs and put us into a little trouble and we struggled to find our rhythm,” added Hofer.

Except for a third set blip the Spartans dominated the attack. TWU finished the match outhitting Winnipeg 24.4 percent to 0.7 percent. The third set was the only set that the Spartans hit below 24 percent and the only set that the Wesmen hit above 00.0 percent.

In addition to Leschied and Ball the Spartans had solid performances from Kara Jansen Van Doorn with 13 kills, 17 digs and three aces and Chelsea Wand with 10 kills. Leading the way for the Wesmen were Carleen Kruschel with eight kills and 12 digs and Sonia Rossy with six kills and five digs.
 
The first set was tightly contested through the first half of the game. A kill by Kara Jansen Van Doorn gave the Spartans a two point, 8-6, lead at the first timeout, but the Wesmen gathered momentum and took a 12-9 lead and forced the TWU into a timeout. The timeout proved very effective as from that point the Spartans dominated the set. Led by Amy Leschied’s six kills in the opening set the Spartans went on a 16-1 run to close out the first set with a 12 point advantage, 25-13. TWU finished the set hitting at 37.5 percent, while Winnipeg finished at -3.1 percent.

The Spartans carried the momentum into the second set as they took a 7-1 lead on an impressive 23-2 overall run. The Wesmen responded to close the gap and trail 8-4 at the first break. Winnipeg continued to close and after a service ace by Brittany Habing only trailed by two points, 9-7. The set continued the exchange of runs as TWU responded an after Jansen Van Doorn’s kill the Spartans had built a 14-9 lead. Winnipeg got the next two points to trail 14-11, but could get no closer as TWU finished the set with a 11-4 run to take a two sets to none lead with at 25-15 win. Leschied and Van Doorn led the Spartans with four kills each in the set, while Winnipeg’s Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with three kills. TWU continued to dominate the attacking plays as they finished the set hitting 24.1 percent, while Winnipeg continued to struggle hitting at -15.6 percent.

The Wesmen found their game in the third set. The cut down their errors and improved their hitting to 25. 9 percent, while limiting the Spartans offence to 5.7 percent, on their way to a 25-18 win. It looked like the match was going to be over early as TWU continued their strong play and jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the first break and 16-14 at the second break. From there the Wesmen took over. Winnipeg went on an 8-0 run to take an 22-16 lead. TWU closed to four points, 22-18, and forced a Wesmen timeout, but were unable to recover as Winnipeg took the third set by seven points. TWU’s Leschied added to her total with another four kills, while the Wesmen’s Kruschel added three more kills to her total.

Winnipeg carried their momentum into the fourth set and after a kill by Lauren Sears had an 8-6 lead at the first break. Leschied then got things going for the Spartans and when the dust had settled TWU had gone on a 10 to three run to take a 16-11 lead into the second break. Having regained the momentum the Spartans carried it through to the end of the set to close out the match with the 25-15 win. Kara Jansen Van Doorn led the Spartans in the final set with five kills, while Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen with three kills.

The two teams will match up again tomorrow night at the Langley Events Centre. Match time is set for 5 p.m. PST. The game will be broadcast live on SpartansTV.

Match Notes: Both teams finished with six team blocks…Winnipeg had the serving edge with eight aces, while TWU had five…the Spartans defense was stellar with 74 digs, while the Wesmen finished with 52 digs…Ball’s 29 digs were two shy of her school record of 31…
