TWU Spartans (0) vs. University of Calgary Dinos (3)
(27-25, 25-17, 25-15)
Strong start not enough for Spartans
Langley, British Columbia – Trinity Western University’s women’s volleyball team came out strong against the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday, but it was not enough as the Dinos won the match 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-15).
Led by the strong passing of 1st year Libero, Daelyn Martens (Chilliwack, BC) – 13 digs, and quality sets from 1st year setter, Lauren Good (Surrey, BC) the Spartans found themselves in control of the first set of the match.
“Daelyn really had a strong game passing the ball tonight,” said TWU Coach Carol Hofer. “And Lauren did an exceptional job at keeping Calgary’s middle off balance throughout the match.”
The Spartans had two set points in the first set of the match (24-23, 25-24) but were unable to take the set as Calgary came from behind to take the first set 27-25.
Calgary came out strong in the next set and took control of set going up 17-13. Calgary carried the lead to a 25-17 victory in set number 2. The Spartans responded in the third set and were even with the Dinos at 9-9. Led by 4th year leftside Alisa Marriott (Grande Prairie, AB) – 16 kills, 8 digs, Calgary went on a 12-4 run and quickly put the match out of reach winning the third set 25-15.
“We have had a little bit of a brain burp in the middle of the last two sets, but other than that we played really steady throughout the match,” said Hofer.
The Spartans had strong play from 1st year power, Kristen Groot (Burnaby, BC) – 7 kills, 13 digs but it was not enough for the Spartans as they fell to 0-1 in league play.
“I feel great about our performance tonight. I am excited that we played consistently well throughout the match,” said Hofer. “Teams in our league are going to see that it is not going to be an easy match playing Trinity Western University. We made that [tonight’s match] a tough match for Calgary, they had to earn the win.”
Next up for the Spartans is Saturday, October 28 vs. the University of Calgary. Game time at Trinity Western University is set for 6:00 PM.
