FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS O’REILLY, PERRIN TO REPRESENT CANADA
WINNIPEG, Manitoba – Both of Canada’s women’s volleyball teams this year will have a Trinity Western flavor as Canada West Rookie of the Year and CIS All-Rookie team member Alicia Perrin (Creston, B.C.) will play middle for the Senior “B” team that will compete at the FISU Games while Spartans setter Lauren O’Reilly (Langley, B.C.) will compete for Canada’s Senior team that be looking to qualify for 2012 Olympic Games in London.
While this will be first opportunity for Perrin to wear the red and white at the senior level, as she will represent Canada in China from
Aug. 12-23 at the 2011 World Universiade Games in Shenzhen, for O’Reilly this will be her third go-round with the Senior team and, notably, was the starting setter with Canada’s top unit last fall at the World Championships.
Last year, O’Reilly joined the Spartans for the spring semester after playing with Canada in the fall and, upon her return to Langley, B.C., she helped Trinity Western to a CIS bronze medal, which was the Spartans first women’s volleyball national championship medal. She led Trinity Western with 8.95 assists per set and was second on the team in digs with 3.15 per set.
Perrin’s standout year included averaging 1.26 blocks per set, which was second in Canada West, and a team-leading attacking percentage of 25.0 per cent.
The players selected for the ‘Senior Team’ will train throughout the summer with select players competing internationally at the following events:
• Pan-American Cup (July 1 – 9 in Chihuahua, Mexico)
• NORCECA Continental Championship (Sept 12 – 17 in Caguas, Puerto Rico)
• Pan-American Games (Oct 15 – 20 in Guadalajara, Mexico)
• Olympic Qualifier (Jan 6 – 9 in Mexico)
Starting in July, the developmental ‘B Team’ will be joined by select players from the Senior roster in order to train for and compete in the Universiade Games.
“We are very excited for both the Senior and Developmental teams this year,” said head coach Arnd Ludwig. “I am confident we have put together to best team to compete internationally this year and challenge for a spot at the Olympics.”
The Senior Team will also be hosting Argentina for an International Series from June 23 – 28.
