WOMEN’S SOCCER (CANADA WEST)
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2011
TRINITY WESTERN (2) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS SEAL TOP SPOT WITH COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN
CALGARY – The Trinity Western Spartans women’s soccer team proved why it is at the top of the Canada West table Saturday afternoon in Calgary as they defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 2-1 at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch in the final regular season contest for both teams.
“I’m pleased that we won as it is a testament to our players on how hard they have worked this season,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “We defended well and Calgary made it challenging for us and were always in the game. After we gave up the early goal we raised our intensity and increased out possession as the first half wore and we just kept chipping away.”
With the victory the Spartans extended their unbeaten streak to 13 matches and in doing so head into playoffs with a Canada West-best record of 12-1-1. By claiming top spot the nationally second-ranked Spartans won the right to host the Canada West Final Four championship next weekend.
“We accomplished a team goal to see if we could win the league and host Canada West. We will enjoy it for the rest of the day and then start to focus on the playoffs and the job ahead of us,” added Roxburgh.
Today’s match was the final match of the Dinos season, having been eliminated by virtue of their loss to UBC Saturday. The team finished off the season with a 6-5-3 record, three points out of a playoff spot.
Heading to TWU for the Canada West Final Four will be the second place University of British Columbia, the third place University of Alberta and the fourth place University of Victoria. The winners of Friday’s opening round matches will advance to Saturday’s gold medal match as well as earn a spot in the CIS national championship Nov. 10-13 at McGill University in Montreal.
In today’s match the Dinos got off to a quick lead in the match when forward Tessa Miller was able to beat Spartan ‘keeper Kristen Funk in the third minute of play. The goal was Miller ‘s sixth of the year, with Robyn Dutton grabbing the assist.
Seventeen minutes after the Miller goal Trinity Western tied it up with a Nikki Wright goal, assisted by Alexi Foster. The goal was Wright’s third on the 2011 campaign. From that point on in the game it was all Spartans, with the Spartans adding another goal at the 30th minute. The goal was scored when Colleen Webber connected on a corner kick pass from Jennifer Castillo, and snuck the ball past Dinos goalie Kristen Barton. The game winning goal was Webber’s second game winner of the season.
The Spartans dominated the second half of action, with four shots on goal in comparison to zero by the Dinos, and much of the ball possession in the half was in the Spartans’ favor. The Spartans could not manage to pad their lead however as Barton stymied Trinity Western’s offensive attack.
TWU keeper Kristen Funk earned her 12th win of the season by making one stop for the Spartans, while Calgary’s Kristen Barton made four saves in the Dinos loss.
Match Notes: TWU finished the afternoon outshooting Calgary nine to three in total shots and six to two in shots on goal… the Spartans had four corner kicks to the Dinos two…TWU was called for two offsides, while Calgary had one…the Spartans were in a “must win” situation to claim top spot as the UBC Thunderbirds ended the season two points behind TWU…
