Keeping Pace…

Langley, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team did what they had to do Saturday against visiting University of Regina Cougars. In a must win, to keep their hopes of post season play alive, the Spartans outscored the Cougars 6-1 to take the match.

“We needed this win to keep pace with Victoria, Alberta and UBC,” said Roxburgh. “But it was also nice to get everybody some playing time.”

The Spartans had numerous scoring opportunities in the match as they outshot the Cougars twenty seven to seven.  The score could have been more lopsided as TWU dominated the play in the first half, outshooting the Cougars sixteen to one, with six corners to zero. But the Spartans only managed to get two markers in the first forty-five minutes.

Ashlee Davison (3rd yr, forward, Maple Ridge, BC) and Carlee O’Brien (1st yr, forward, Nanaimo, BC) led the Spartans with two goals each, with Natalie Tafoya (4th yr, forward, Arvada, CO) and Janine Drake (3rd yr, forward, Portland, OR) each adding single markers. Regina midfielder Kerri Burgess scored the lone goal for the Cougars in the 78th minute.

TWU goals came in the 26th minute, O’Brien from Angela Trauter, the 44th minute Regina “Own goal” credited to TWU’s O’Brien, the 50th minute, Ashlee Davison from Stephanie Stewart, the 52nd minute, Natalie Tafoya from Krysta Kons, the 64th minute, Ashlee Davison from Lindsay Maier and the 67th minute Janine Drake from Maier.

The Spartans Angela Garriott (first 54 minutes) and Anna Maria Enfield (final 36 minutes) split the match for TWU, while Regina’s Melissa Bateman played the entire ninety minutes for the Cougars.

The win moves the Spartans to a record of 5-3-1, while the loss drops the Cougars to 0-6-2.

Next up for the Spartans is at Simon Fraser University on Monday, October 6. Match time at the Coquitlam town center is set for 7:00 pm.

Match Notes: TWU’s Kristi Haukeland (4th yr, forward, Surrey, BC) was named the Huskie Energy Spartan player of the match…the Spartans swept the Cougars 2-0 and 4-2 last year, and defeated them 4-0 earlier this season…Regina’s goal was their fourth of the season…Carlee O’Brien now has seven goals in league play…Regina’s Bateman made eleven saves…
