Spartans Draw in Final Pre-Season Match

Langley, British Columbia –The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team started slow, but finished strong in their 0-0 draw with the Western Baptist College Warriors Saturday evening at TWU.

“I’m a little disappointed that the match ended in a draw; I would have preferred a win,” said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “But I am really pleased with the way we responded in the second half after a slow start.”

The Warriors carried most of the play for the first fifteen minutes. The Spartans were able to respond late in the half, but overall TWU looked sluggish for most of the 45 minutes.  WBC outshot TWU 5-1 in the first 20 minutes, with TWU holding the edge 8-3 in the last 25 minutes of the first half.

The Spartans were a totally different squad in the second half as they took the play to the Warriors and kept them pinned in their own end. They had numerous quality chances, outshooting WBC 8-1, but were unable to get the ball into the back of the Western Baptist net.

TWU’s Carlee O’Brien (1st yr, forward, Nanaimo, BC) led the Spartans with six shots, with Angela Trauter (3rd yr, midfield, Langley, BC) adding four shots. Sarah Muri led the Warriors with three shots, two on net. 

Spartan keeper Angela Garriott (2nd yr, Campbell River, BC) and Warrior keeper Kim Mendenhall each played 90 minutes and had four saves to earn the respective shutouts.

TWU opens Canada West league play at UBC on Thursday, September 11 at 5:30 pm.

Match Notes: Spartans end non-conference play with a record of 0-0-3…TWU outshot WBC 17-9…the Spartans had 11 fouls to the Warriors’ 8…TWU’s Carlee O’Brien came close to breaking the deadlock in the 71st minute when her shot from the top of the box clanged off the right post...
