TWU's Liz Spear, a fifth-year student from Cloverdale, B.C. led the No. 7 Spartans (14-6) to a stunning weekend sweep of the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds (1-73) thus earning the Spartans home-court advantage to open the Canada West playoffs.
Over the weekend series six-foot-two middle had 20 kills, six blocks while hitting .366 to lead TWU to 3-0 and 3-2 wins Friday and Saturday night at TWU. The two-time all-Canadian finished the conference play fifth in conference hitting percentage at .331 and seventh in blocks, with 67.
The Spartans host Alberta in a best-of-three conference quarter-final this weekend.
