FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS NEED FIVE TO TOP MUSTANGS
KINGSTON, Ontario – The Trinity Western Spartans (2-0) had three players reach double digits in kills as they edged the Western Mustangs (1-1) 3-2 during the second day of the 24thannual Queen's men's volleyball invitational.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 23-25 and 15-12 in favour of Trinity Western.
“The lesson of the day for us was we have to learn how to finish teams off when we have them down. The third set is the most important set of the match and that has typically been the set where we have been the weakest,” commented TWU men’s coach Ben Josephson. “But it was another good character win as the guys found a way to battle.”
Josh Doornenbal of Edmonton, Dan Jansen Van Doorn of Langley, B.C. and Rudy Verhoeff of Calgary each registered double digits in scoring. Doornenbal led the team with 14 kills while Verhoeff had 13 and Jansen Van Doorn had 12. Setter Ben Ball of Abbotsford, B.C., had busy night recording 56 assists. Josh Wiebe, also of Abbotsford, B.C., had 10 digs.
Western's Matt Poulin of Winnipeg had a game high 15 kills while Matt Waite of St. Thomas, Ont., posted 13. Poulin also recorded five digs in the loss. Matthew Gibson of Oshawa, Ont., tallied 47 assists.
Brandon was coming off a 3-2 loss to the Western Mustangs, while Queen's lost to Trinity Western 3-2 in Friday's results.
Tomorrow, Trinity Western will face Brandon at 1:00pm, while Western will battle host Queen's in the final game of the invitational tournament at 3:00pm.
