DINOS GET RARE WIN OVER SPARTANS

CALGARY - Led by their strong passing and hitting, the University of Calgary Dinos defeated the Trinity Western University Spartans in three sets (26-28, 14-25, 20-25) Saturday afternoon at the Jack Simpson Gym. It was the first victory for Calgary over TWU since a 3-1 win in Langley back on November 5, 2004.

"We didn't pass the ball particularly well and so we weren't able to get a lot of the things going we were hoping to," said TWU head coach Ben Josephson. "Their middles had great matches and their passing was very good."

The Dinos swung well all afternoon, finishing with a .348 hitting percentage, and 48 kills to TWU's 31, and they also outdug the Spartans 31-25. The top blocking team in the Canada West, TWU did continue its strong presence defensively at the net with 12 blocks to U of C's 4.

The pivotal first set was close as the Spartans held three one-point leads before earning their first two-point gap 22-20 on a double block. But the Dinos would rally, reaching three game points before finally putting the set away 28-26 on one of David Egan's (Calgary) six kills.

The second was tied at two before Calgary middle Oleg Podporin (Almaty, Kazakhstan) stepped to the service line, and helped lead the Dinos to six straight points, including two aces, to lead 8-2. TWU would rally back to within three points at 16-13, but that's as close as they would get as Calgary rattled off nine of the next 10 points to cruise to a second set win.

TWU held an 18-14 lead in the third on back-to-back blocks by Rudy Verhoeff (Calgary) and Ben Ball (Abbotsford, B.C.), but again Calgary had an answer, roaring back with seven kills to take 11 of the final 13 points and win the match.

Chaim Schalk (Red Deer, Alta.) and Steve Rogalsky (Maple Ridge, B.C.) each had 10 kills to lead the Spartans. Omar Langford (Toronto) led all players with 16 kills for the Dinos, while Podporin finished with 10 kills, three blocks and three of the team's four aces.

The win moves Calgary into sole possession of fifth place in Canada West at 7-6, while Trinity Western falls to 6-7 as five teams continue to battle for the final four playoff spots in the conference. The Dinos and Spartans do battle in the rubber match Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. MT at the Jack.
