Spartans Kick-Off 2001 With WIN…

Langley, British Columbia –
The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team began their 2001-2002 Canada West season with an impressive 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-22) win over the University of Regina Cougars Thursday night at TWU.

TWU started off slowly in the first set and trailed 8-5 at the first technical time out. But then the Spartans started to roll, as they went on to outscore the Cougars 20-15 to win the first set 25-23. Then continued their roll with an impressive 10 point, 25-15 victory in the second set. The third set saw more of the same as the Spartans jumped out to a 20-14 lead before cruising to a 25-22 victory.  In total between the middle of the first set and the middle of the third the Spartans outscored the Cougars by 21 points, 65-44.

“We probably had a few jitters at the beginning, but that was just because it was our first league game at home,” said TWU head coach Ron Pike. “The second game was a little more characteristic of how we can play – a little more efficient with less errors.”

Chris Meehan (1st yr, middle/rightside,Clearwater, BC) lead the way for the Spartans with 11 kills and 2 Aces. Statistical leader for the Cougars were Kelly McTavish with 6 kills and 4 digs.

Next up for the Spartans is the UBC Thunderball tournament Friday at UBC. Then the Spartans will come home to face the Cougars on Saturday, October 20. Game time at TWU is set for 6:00 PM.
