Seniors lead weekend sweep

Langley, British Columbia –
February 5 was senior night and the Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team left home in winning fashion. The nationally ranked (#10) Spartans handed the University of Regina their second straight loss by winning the match 3-2. Game score for the Spartans were 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 25-15 and 22-25.

Game one found the Spartans continuing last night’s surge, as TWU never let the Cougars into the game. Regina surprised the sluggish Spartans in game two, by controlling the whole game. TWU fought back from behind in game three to overcome their funk and take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Spartans secured the victory by handily shaking off the pesty Cougars in game four, even though they dropped game five.

The Spartans improve to 5-15 in Canada West play, with the win, while the Cougars drop to 1-13.

Dan Bainard led the Spartans with 18 kills and Luke Bainard added 15 kills and 14 digs. Spartan’s Jeff Ingwersen chipped in 15 kills. Greg Bridgeman led Regina with 21 kills.

“It was a good night for us. We struggled to gain a consistent rhythm, but it was important for us to get the sweep,” stated Head Coach Ron Pike.

“Jeff Warren played solid again for us and Dan (Bainard) had another good night,” commented Pike.

The Spartans will end their season on the road on February 11-12. The Spartans will battle with Alberta. Game time will be 8 p.m. both nights.
